The comic uses this technique to tell of the slaying of the beast and the murder of the brother. However, it sets the tone and even tells readers what has happened within the comic even without depicting any characters or movement. The small addition of the repeated panels that change colors does not seem like it should have a huge impact. The image on the left demonstrates how Carroll uses imagery differently to convey the story. This comic is an example of one that uses both text and image to its capacity, seamlessly combining the two elements into one sole art piece.īelow are some examples of panels within the comic. Both mediums used are outstanding, crafted very carefully to fit the precise narrative that Carroll intended. It focuses on psychological horror, and effectively utilizes suspense to drive the mystery forward. This horror comic details the story of a man who murders his brother, but yet his brother inexplicably reappears days later. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to compare digital format to print.
I couldn’t recommend her work highly enough. I chose to write about this story because it is one of my favorites, and I just acquired my copy of Emily Carroll’s Through the Woods (a compilation book of a handful of her comics which includes His Face All Red). Her concentration is mostly Horror or Fantasy genres, and her mind is a very magical and mysterious place.
